NAGOYA, JAPAN

“DETOURS” is a travel series by The Hop Review. Being a weary traveler almost always calls for a reward at the end of the day–and we prefer it in the form of a pint. Here, we will document those beer breaks–as we travel the U.S. and beyond–with quips, photographs and Q&As. Cheers, to the adventurous beer trekker.

Y. MARKET BREWING

4 CHOME-17-6 MEIKEI, NAGOYA, AICHI PREFECTURE, JAPAN

Less congested and crowded than Tokyo, Nagoya is lively and equally as interesting. Modern and hip neighborhoods fill with fashionable 20-30 somethings. Masses of teenagers shuffle from multiple-level arcades. Anime & manga fans of all ages congregate at the Otaku store. Families leisurely strolling and window shopping, and co-workers heading out for post-work drinks (and schmoozing with the boss). The streets are filled with activity.

Down a narrow street and swaddled behind larger buildings, Y. Market Brewery is a local favorite. With three floors, the ground level serving as their brewery operations, the second floor for their taproom and kitchen with the third floor terrace reserved for private use. We grabbed a table right before the post-work crowd started filling up the space. Forgoing typical rice lager styles, Y. Market had on tap an interesting selection of draft beers that reflects changing tastes. Bitter, yeasty and citrus-y beers are working their way to people’s palettes.

Along with the excellent beers, Y. Market’s Taproom is a comfortable and modernly designed space. Clean and minimal with bright colors mixed in with wood and concrete accents, we can see why business-folks linger into the wee hours of the evening. And although language was a barrier for us, the staff made us feel welcome. Kanpai!

What We Drank

Oasis Gate Golden AleRecovering from a night of intense karaoke-ing (and drinking), this delicious Golden Ale brightened up our spirits. Radiating in color and taste with an interesting combination of German Saphir, New Zealand Motueka and American Cascade hops, this beer had a soft bitter taste with fragrant citrus notes.
