The organization certifies and educates beer professionals through a series of exams at different levels to test one’s beer IQ. Earning the Certified Cicerone title validates that one has studied and attained a certain level of knowledge in the industry.
But like any standard of certification, becoming a Cicerone is challenging. Through a series of four levels, the program offers increasingly harder tests for people dedicated to perfecting their beer knowledge.
So while more than 124,000 people have passed level one Cicerone certification only 158 qualify as Advanced Cicerones (third level) and only 22 have reached the highest level of Master Cicerone status.
Consider achieving the apex of Cicerone status equivalent to becoming a Somm in the wine industry. A Master Cicerone needs to conquer a two-day twenty-hour long exam to earn the crown of Master Cicerone. Which is why the exam has a failure rate of ninety percent.
