Athletic Brewing Company Co-Founder Bill Shufelt has a tradition. Every time he and his brother climb a mountain or tackle a trail, they always celebrate by cracking open two brews at the end.

“That was their celebration,” says Athletic’s other co-founder, John Walker. “They were appreciating the outdoors, enjoying each other’s company, and just thriving.”

That love of the environment became a core component when Shufelt, alongside Walker, launched what is now America’s largest non-alcoholic beer company in 2018.

That tradition lives on at Athletic, where the company’s Two For The Trails initiative aims to increase outdoor access for people in all regions of the country and multiple continents, whether that’s through urban parks, green spaces, waterway protection, and more.

It’s a love shared by another B-Corp-certified company, Oboz Footwear, one of the best outdoor footwear brands. Oboz Footwear is tailor-made for adventure junkies and nature lovers alike, and for every pair of shoes sold, they work with organizations like veritree and Trees For The Future to plant trees.

With common ground protecting the landscape they love, the foremost non-alcoholic beer brand and the beloved hiking footwear company are participating in Untappd’s ultimate hiking giveaway.

The Best Footwear for the Best Trails

Bringing together Outside and Bozeman yields Oboz, an outdoor footwear brand inspired by a love of exploring, hiking, and experiencing the big, beautiful world.

“We love getting out on the trail,” says Oboz Marketing and ESG Manager, Abigail Cook. “Whether it’s a path in downtown Bozeman or a rugged peak in Yellowstone.”

At Oboz, hiking is life, whether you’re hiking to go fishing, hiking to go camping, just walking your dog, going for a stroll on your lunch break, or even hiking when you’re running. “That’s just life!” says Cook.

Whatever trail you follow, Oboz makes shoes for every path.

That’s the common ground.

“We truly believe that we are united by the trails regardless of how long you’ve hiked or how many times you’ve been outdoors,” says Cook. “We can have great conversations and connect with one another out on the trails.”

It’s why Oboz has a mantra: Love Hiking. Born of Bozeman and with a love of being outdoors together, Oboz believes that hiking holds different meanings for each person. All the paths we walk are different. Most importantly, a shoe is just a shoe until someone puts their feet into it and moves. At that moment, shoes become our trusty steeds, sticking with us wherever our imagination takes us.

The companions on our feet are with us when we go up mountains, down city paths, or along crazy ten-day treks somewhere in the world. Wherever your feet take you, Oboz has a pair of footwear for you dedicated to three words: durability, comfort, and fit.

If you’re enjoying the mountain you’re climbing, awed by the vast landscape in front of you, chatting with the friends around you, “and not [thinking about] your feet hurting or aching or blisters,” says Cook, “we’ve done a nice job. This is the ultimate footwear test.”

To hit those comfort and durability standards, Oboz designs each style from the ground up with a hiking-first mentality and rigorously tests each design, including many miles on trail throughout the R&D process.

For instance, the Hyalite, a new collection launched this year, is grounded in the idea of grabbing your friends and hitting the trail. Cook calls it the idea of “coming together.”

More of an all-day style, the Hyalite has all the comfort, fit, and durability features to support you on the trail, but also the style to comfortably head to your favorite brewery on a Saturday afternoon or to work during the week. The Hyalite line seamlessly blends the everyday with the extraordinary. Wear them to work with the thought in the back of your head that you’re going to hit the trail when you sign off at 5 p.m.

“They’re a great way to explore while keeping style in mind,” explains Cook, who recently tested her Hyalites at Land’s End, a winding and windy trail with stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. “And the Hyalite has great fit and comfort.”

Oboz isn’t just a footwear brand; they’re a lifestyle. And they don’t just talk the talk…they walk the walk, too.

Since launching in 2007, Oboz has made a commitment to plant trees for every pair of footwear sold. One might say the environment is top of mind for the B Corp-certified business.

Oboz works with two organizations: Trees for the Future and veritree. The former plants trees in sub-Saharan Africa, using a forest garden approach. This form of agroforestry means you get all the benefits of planting a tree—helping with air quality, sequestering carbon, and providing shade—with the benefit that it provides jobs and food for families whose farmers go through a three-year period of training to maintain these tree farms.

And veritree brings Oboz’s message a little closer to home in regions of Oregon and British Columbia. Veritree not only plants trees, but also accurately tracks the impact that is available in real time through an online dashboard. Additionally, its aborists now proudly sport Oboz footwear while planting trees across North America.

“Trees are meaningful,” says Cook, who believes the mission helps consumers connect to an impactful topic that’s relatable to everyone. “They help all of us; they’re critical.”

Emphasizing Oboz’s sustainable mission from the start, she adds, “We’re just doing our part … and we haven’t wavered.”

Since its inception, Oboz has planted nearly seven million trees. And they have no plan to slow down.

To fully show their commitment to the environment, Oboz achieved B Corp Certification two years ago.

B Corp Certification is a designation that recognizes that a for-profit business “meets the highest standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials,” according to the organization’s website.

Overall, the B Corp network aims to leverage committed businesses to have a positive impact on the planet.

And while B Corp Certification has grown globally, the number of footwear companies that hold this accreditation remains very small.

“Achieving a certification like B Corp is intensive and requires everyone’s involvement,” says Cook, “so it’s something we’re really proud of.”

Nearing its twenty-year anniversary, Oboz has plenty to look forward to, but it will always stay rooted in its solid ground.

“You can hike anywhere,” says Cook, admitting she planned to go for a little walk during lunch. “We encourage folks to get outdoors, but not take it so seriously. Just have fun while you’re out there. And if you are serious, enjoy yourself along the way and celebrate what you’ve achieved and accomplished.”

Maybe even celebrate that accomplishment by cracking open an Athletic brew.

The Best Beer for the Best Trails

At Athletic, sustainability and the environment have been top of mind since day one.

“It’s a part of our DNA,” explains Athletic Co-Founder Walker.

Any goal. Every project. Sustainability plays a part. “At the end of the day,” says Walker, “we’re trying to create an environment for people to enjoy life, experiences, and the outdoors for as long as possible.”

Three years ago, Athletic reached one of its most important milestones, earning a B Corp Certification.

While Walker emphasizes that Athletic had already implemented many environmentally friendly practices from the very beginning, the certification simply celebrated the beverage business’s commitment and allowed it to join a broader community of like-minded companies.

Athletic Brewing’s Impact Manager, Cara Wilson, who led the B Corp application process, emphasizes that the certification extends beyond environmental impact, encompassing employee wellness, engagement, and growth, as well as responsible supplier operations and customer stewardship.

“Pretty much everything you can think of as far as how we operate our business and how we make a positive impact inside and out of our walls,” explains Wilson, who said the arduous process took over a year to complete.

Earning B Corp status isn’t just about slapping a logo on something; it’s about continuous improvement.

This year, Athletic re-certified, proving once again their commitment and showing sustainable growth in several key areas.

For instance, water usage. Athletic reports that they offset 9.1 million gallons of water in 2024, equivalent to a year’s average water usage for 84 households or enough to fill 13 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

“We understand we’re in a water-intensive industry,” says Wilson. “We’re constantly working to reduce our water per barrel of beer produced; that’s been top of mind.”

Wilson also cites Athletic’s commitment to making its teammates feel empowered, offering coworkers up to twelve days a year to volunteer.

“We donate more than just dollars,” she explains. “That’s something we’re really proud of that we do inside our walls.”

Outside their walls, Athletic’s largest sustainability campaign, Two For The Trails, received two prestigious Gold Halo Awards this year for Best Cause Product Initiative and Best Sustainability or Conservation.

Athletic Co-Founder Shufelt’s story of hitting the trail with his brother and celebrating with a couple of brews lives on with Two For The Trails.

“We’re really just looking to increase outdoor access for more people,” says Wilson, who loves drinking either an Athletic Ripe Pursuit lemon radler, All Out extra dark, or Atlética Mexican-style copper after her own adventures on the trails.

Athletic contributed up to $2 million to more than 170 organizations in 2024, and has helped fund a broad range of projects across 46 states, as well as in Canada and the UK, since the program launched in 2018.

Those like the Florida Trail Association, which focused on repairing storm damage on trails from Hurricane Helene. The organization’s 14 volunteer parties contributed 13,000 hours of work.

Athletic’s Two For The Trails program also contributed to six organizations rebuilding trails damaged by the Palisades Fire in LA, funded signage in areas with extremely remote hiking to prevent people from getting lost, maintained mountain biking trails in San Diego, and helped fund ADA-accessible trails in Connecticut.

These are the types of projects that Wilson says Athletic loves to support.

“We’re making an impact as far as we can,” she says.

Since its inception, Two For The Trails has funded nearly 550 grants totalling more than $6.3 million and helped fund over 700 projects, according to the company.

When the 2025 application opened last month, Athletic received fifty proposals on the first day, the most it had ever received.

Looking ahead, Athletic continues to aim high, with big goals for 2026.

Walker says they’re placing an emphasis on water reduction, aiming for zero waste, and becoming less reliant on CO2.

“Every single organization within our team is trying to figure out how to be more sustainable,” he sums up. “It’s just a part of who we are.”
