At only 1,214 square miles, Rhode Island may be the smallest state in America, but it packs a surprisingly mighty punch when it comes to beer.

The Ocean State, so dubbed thanks to its 400 miles of coastline, is whetting drinkers’ palates with everything from barn houses with 2,000-square-foot barrel aging and wood cellars to places making highly rated hoppy ales, precision-executed lagers, and fun and funky barrel-aged beers.

Just last year, we named Providence’s Moniker Brewery one of our “Top 17 Breweries to Watch in 2025,” because every single beer they sent us last year (and it was a lot) smashed it, whether a Dortmunder export lager or German pilsner.

And that’s on top of breweries we already love like Long Live Beerworks and Proclamation Ale Company.

So call us crazy, but we’re putting Rhode Island on the map as your next go-to beer destination.

And here are the places that are telling us why.

The Best Breweries in Rhode Island

Moniker: Remember that name.

That was our advice when we named this Providence-based brewery to our list of the “17 Best Breweries to Watch in 2025.”

Have you heard of them? Well, listen to this because here’s what impressed us so much at the mighty brewery from the smallest state in the country: Not only did we enjoy all the beers they so kindly sent us, but one of the styles that impressed us most is rarely seen in the States—Dortmunder.

We loved this beer so much that we named it to our ranking of ““The Top Fifteen Beers We Drank in March 2024.”

The beer speaks for itself from a brewery nailing everything from esoteric styles (along with that Dortmunder they brewery used to make a flagship cream ale) to lagers the likes of German pilsners, Mexican lagers, Czech-style pilsners, and even hoppy ales.

We mentioned Moniker a lot last year, and we expect to hear that name leave our lips many times in the future.

The word is out. Now it’s time for you to go to the place where there’s a beer for everybody. And everybody knows your name.

The highest-rated brewery in Rhode Island on Untappd with a 4.18 rating from 279k reviews, Long Live Beerworks celebrated its ninth anniversary at the beginning of 2025.

This Providence-based brewery is one of our favorite under-the-radar breweries in the Northeast for their playful pastry stouts, creative sours, and heavenly hazy and double IPAs.

In 2022, co-founder Jessica deBray finally took Long Live Beerworks to a new location in Boston, but if you’re in Rhode Island’s capital, you have to stop by the OG spot to get some of the state’s best beers.

Over the years, we’ve named Long Live Beerworks to “The Top 12 Beers We Drank in February 2024,” “9 Breweries With the Best Pastry Stouts, According to You,” and “The 20 Best Beers to Drink in Spring 2022.”

Housed in a renovated factory, Long Live Beerworks’ two-story taproom has plenty on tap to drink for everyone, no matter what you choose.

But if you’re looking for some options, check out winners from the most recent Untappd Community Awards, where Long Live Beerworks nabbed the most medals in the state (34), including twelve golds in categories like imperial pastry stout (Otto Notti), triple IPA (8th Anniversary), and imperial stout (The Night Maiden).

Tilted Barn Brewery

One Hemsley Pl, Exeter, RI 02822 | (401) 500-6765

Living up to its name, Tilted Barn used to be in an actual askew farmhouse. Today, a newly built 30-bbl brewhouse and 10,000-square-foot barn houses Untappd’s second-highest-rated brewery in Rhode Island, with its 4.11 rating from 171.5k reviews.

Started by Kara and Matt Richardson, Tilted Barn holds the title of Rhode Island’s original farm brewery, since opening in Exeter in 2014.

The Richardons have always found a way to connect with the land, starting Rhode Island’s first commercial hop farm, Ocean State Hops, in 2007.

We’re sure the two-floor tasting room and gorgeous setting lure folks in, but it’s the expertly crafted hoppy ales and lagers that keep folks around.

In the most recent Untappd Community Awards, Tilted Barn garnered the second-highest collection of medals in the state (20).

A few beers that locked down golds include Toadshade, a hazy pale ale, Spruced, an American pale wheat, and Strange Design, a kölsch.

Lori Whitham took over running the business at Proclamation Ale Company, aka PROC, after her husband and founder, Dave Whitham, passed away in December 2020.

With the goal to give its local community fresh, creative craft beer beyond the boring amber ales of the day, this Rhode Island-based brewery isn’t afraid to get a little crazy inside its 2,000-square-foot barrel aging and wood cellar with the state’s largest oak aging and mixed fermentation program, and a 3,000-square-foot tasting room.

Rhode Island’s fourth highest-rated brewery on Untappd, with a respectable 4 rating from 248.5k reviews, PROC locked in ten medals at the Untappd Community Awards. Notably, an Irish dry stout and American light lager took gold, showing just how Proclamation Ale has lived up to its over-ten-year mission.

Buttonwoods Brewery

50 Sims Ave, Providence, RI 02909 | (401) 203-3065

Slotting into the spot of Untappd’s third highest-rated brewery in Rhode Island, Buttonwoods Brewery has been cranking out beers for the last eight years with one goal in mind: Make the best beer they can.

What does that mean?

Well, highly rated hoppy ales, precision-executed lagers, and fun and funky barrel-aged beers.

For example, The World Is Yours, a 4.2-rated UCA gold-winning double IPA, and Infinite Expansion, a 4.3-rated UCA gold-winning stout.

Originally located in Cranston, Buttonwoods moved to Providence recently, where you’ll probably find founder, co-owner, and head brewer Morgan Snyder serving you. “We’ve always said Morgan could become best friends with a perfect stranger,” writes the brewery on its website, “and with Buttonwoods, he has always strived to make our space as friendly, open, and encouraging as possible.”

With the motto to make “Beer With Meaning,” Buttonwood spreads the love across the taplist, which currently includes a Berliner weiss, helles, West Coast pilsner, New England pale ale, DIPA, Czech pilsner, Czech amber lager, coffee stout, and Italian pilsner.

Pivotal Brewing Co.

500 Wood St Building 111, Bristol, RI 02809 |
140 Broadway, Newport, RI 02840 | (401) 638-1100

With an original location in the historic Bristol Industrial Park in a former aircraft wire mill, Pivotal Brewing Co. just launched its new Newport location at the end of May.

Now with two locations, Pivotal has become a staple on the Rhode Island beer scene.

What began as a dream for co-founders Todd Nicholson and Rebecca Ernst, Pivotal represents the duo’s desire to “pivot” into the beer industry from other careers.

When it comes to the beer, Pivotal prides itself on being eclectic. You only need to look at the six awards the Rhode Island brewery picked up in the 2025 Untappd Community Awards to see this, including a gold for a coffee stout, witbier, and West Coast IPA with Mosaic HyperBoost, Mosaic DynaBoost, Strata and Citra, and a silver for a dark lager, märzen, and pilsner with U.S.-grown Lorien hops.

Ragged Island Brewing Company

54 Bristol Ferry Rd, Portsmouth, RI 02871

We have a soft spot for flora and fauna, so Ragged Island Brewing Company could make this list just for a taproom that is “living.” Inside a former garden center and nursery, Ragged Island has an actual plant wonderland inside.

The Portsmouth-based brewery started in 2017 as a one-bbl brewhouse before growing to a thirty-seven-acre farm brewery and ten-barrel operation.

We recommend the award-winning Custom House Coffee Stout or Dónde Está La Biblioteca Mexican lager.

Origin Beer Project

425 W Fountain St #104, Providence, RI 02903 | (401) 307-3236

Rounding out the top five highest-rated breweries in Rhode Island on Untappd, Origin Beer Project locks in a league-leading 4-star rating.

Originally launched by Cheyne and Erika Tessier as an alternating proprietorship at Buttonwoods, Origin Beer Project opened its own spot in 2023.

This nano brewery likes to say it focuses on process over trends, meaning you’ll find everything from old-world low-ABV styles of beer like a 4% ABV nitro British-style golden ale, 4.8% ABV German pilsner, and 5% ABV Grisette spritzer.

Additionally, there’s an extensive non-alcoholic menu with cocktails like an Espresso Phony Negroni, Blood Orange Elderflower Mimosa, and Amaro Falso.

Honorable Mention

Narragansett Brewing Company

271 Tockwotton St, Providence, RI 02903 | (401) 437-8970

C’mon, neighbor, you can’t go to Rhode Island without having a ‘Gansett!

And we’re not the only ones who think so.

The nineteenth largest craft brewery in the States, according to the Brewers Association, Narragansett’s taproom has racked up awards over the last couple of years, including Yankee Magazine’s 2022 “Best of Rhode Island,” Rhode Island Hospitality Associations’ 2023 Brewery of the Year, and Rhode Island Monthly’s 2024 best brewery patio.

You might go for the freshest of fresh Narragansett Lager, but you’ll get way more than you probably think.

Did you know ‘Gansett makes a German-style leichtbier, rye lager, dunkelweiss, maibock, English porter, NEIPA, American pale ale, Czech-style pilsner, and coffee milk stout?

Yeah, neither did we.

You’re welcome, neighbor.
